Lou Kollias
IWEA President

I just got back from WEFTEC which returned to Dallas after a 10 year absence and the turnout was good. Over 17,000 attendees came to "Big D". Once again, the CSWEA/IWEA Reception on Sunday night was a wonderful affair and well attended. Thanks go out to Scott Trotter of Central States for organizing a great event.

Along with attending the Technical Sessions, I had the opportunity to attend several WEF sponsored meetings. On Monday I attended the workshop meeting on a proposed Utility Membership category within WEF. WEF is very interested in developing such a category to bring in new members. It would mirror the Utility category in AWWA. I also attended the Leadership Day Workshop which was attended by MA leaders from across the country. Topics include Getting Young Professionals Involved, Mission Friendly Revenue Generation, and Financial Policies that Work. They were all very informative sessions and IWEA will look into implementing some of the useful aspects.

Next year WEFTEC will be in San Diego, and the CSWEA and IWEA Local Arrangements Committee will be manning a booth to promote WEFTEC '08 in Chicago.

An IWEA Local Arrangements Committee is being formed to help organize all the activities associated with WEFTEC. Brian Perkovich is the Committee co-chair and is looking for volunteers. You can contact him at 773/ 256-3509 or brian.perkovich@mwrd.org.

Speaking of committees, the Nominating Committee, comprised of Larry Ziemba, Greg Cargill, and Brian Perkovich, have come up with two excellent candidates for Second Vice President and Director '10. Dennis Priewe, our current Treasurer, has been nominated for Second Vice President and Ted Denning, our Membership Chair, has been nominated for Director '10. Ted has been Membership Chair since 1998 and will be passing his Chair position to Raj Ojha, his Vice Chair, but we need a replacement for Dennis. Dennis has been Treasurer since January 2002 when the position was created, and will be stepping down in June 2007. If you would be interested in serving IWEA as Treasurer please contact me by phone or E-mail.

IWEA can always use volunteers on our Committees. Please consider joining one you're interested in. Not only do you get to network with your wastewater cohorts, but you'll have some fun along the way. I can't tell you the number of new friends and contacts I have made during my time in IWEA. Two Committees that could use some volunteers are the Newsletter Committee and the Public Education & Student Affairs Committee. Please contact me if you are interested.

By the time you read this edition of the Clarifier, our Collection Systems Committee will have held their Annual Seminar and Exhibit on November 2 at the Hyatt Lisle. The Committee had assembled a great group of speakers, and it was surely a great success.
