Lou Kollias
IWEA President

The Illinois Water Environment Association (IWEA) has been very busy since my last article.

First the fun stuff. The third annual IWEA Golf Outing was held on June 16 at the Cinder Ridge Golf Course. More than 40 golfers enjoyed a great day of golf and fun. Thanks to Greg Cargill and Paul Kranz for organizing another successful outing.

Members of the Public Education & Student Affairs Committee led by Larry Ziemba, Past President, participated as judges at the Illinois Junior Academy of Science State Exposition at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, during the first weekend in May. This is one of Larry's pet projects, and he does an outstanding job every year in organizing IWEA members to participate.

The Executive Board held a Long Range Planning Meeting on May 5 at the Cantigny Golf Course Clubhouse in Wheaton. The Board agreed to approach the Central States Water Environment Association and the Illinois Association of Water Pollution Control Operators to discuss the association franchise issue for the state of Illinois. Meetings will be planned this year to discuss this issue. The Board also agreed to relocate the IWEA archives to the MWRDGC Stickney Water Reclamation Plant.

On June 9, an IWEA Executive Board and Committee Chair meeting was held at the Starved Rock State Park Lodge in Utica. The Executive Board reappointed Mary Johnson and Dennis Priewe to Secretary and Treasurer, respectively, for another year. They have been doing an outstanding job, and IWEA would be lost without them.

The Illinois Section of American Water Works Association (ISAWWA) has invited the IWEA to participate in a joint conference again in Springfield in March 2009. IWEA has agreed and we will try to duplicate the extremely successful joint conference held this past March, except for the tornado. IWEA has also reserved the Peoria Holiday Inn City Centre for the Annual Conference in March 2008. The Annual Conference Committee has been very busy as you can see.
By now, all of you have received the Call for Abstracts for the 2007 Annual Conference to be held at the Doubletree Hotel and Conference Center in Bloomington on March 5-7, 2007. IWEA is excited to hold the conference in central Illinois again next year. It is quite evident IWEA is making an effort to reach out to the entire state of Illinois by scheduling our conferences in centrally located areas. Please send me your comments if we are succeeding or if we can do more.

Kathy Cooper, First Vice-President, attended a WEF workshop in Washington, D.C. on June 19-20, to discuss membership issues. WEF is considering a utility membership category and other incentives to increase membership. This is a critical issue for WEF and IWEA to solve in order to survive and thrive as useful organizations.

WEFTEC '06 is scheduled for October 21-25 in Dallas, Texas. Once again, Central States and IWEA will be co-hosts for a reception Sunday evening, October 22, at the Hyatt Regency Dallas. Hope to see you all there.
